Health Careers

Make a difference with a career in health. Get all the information you need to take the next step in your career with the Health Careers service.

When people are asked to name careers in health, most people will say doctor, nurse, midwife and paramedic. In fact, there are more than 350 different careers ranging from art therapist to window cleaner.

Health Careers aims to make people aware of the range of opportunities available and offer them up-to-date and reliable careers information. There is also support for current students and staff through career planning resources and information on where to access support.

The Health Careers website provides detailed information on more than 350 roles in health with a number of real-life stories and videos. There are also top tips for planning your own career.

course finder with more than 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate courses

a registered section where users can save their favourite content, sign-up to email communication and personalise their homepage based on individual interests

explore roles section which enables visitors to see an overview of different categories in one place, or a list of roles within that category.

‘compare roles’ tool enabling users to compare bite-sized information on up to three different roles

an events calendar for information on career related events across the country such as university open days or careers fairs

careers advisers and teachers section that includes teaching resources, toolkits and information on the Step into the NHS schools competition

Our annual school's competition for students in years 8 and 9 grows every year and 3610 students got involved in 2018/19. That number could be closer to 12000 because we know some schools shortlist entries before submitting them!

We want students to choose an NHS career that interests them and create a job description and an advert to tell their friends and other young people about it. Students can work on their own or in teams of up to four. 

Prizes up for grabs: 

overall national winner(s) receive Amazon vouchers worth £50. Overall national winner(s) will also receive a class trip to a local science venue

ten regional winners will each receive an Amazon voucher worth £25

highly commended certificates will also be awarded

Real life, your life is an online toolkit of activities and multimedia resources that support Careers Education and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) at Key Stage 4. Updated in 2019, the package provides teachers with everything they need to deliver interactive and informative lessons with confidence.

Real life, your life consists of five topic areas that each delivers different learning outcomes and helps students to develop key skills to prepare them for the world of work, whilst also gaining a unique insight into the wealth of career opportunities available in the NHS.
