Best Practice

Organisations establish the content for programmes based on the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for AHP Preceptorship - Should this be aligned to JD's or HCPC standards etc?

Within the AHP Preceptorship Implementation Framework Point R7 suggests that organisations can maximise preceptorship impact: by integrating within workforce planning, training and education, human resources and wider workforce policies.

This would include job descriptions, job planning and alignment to regulatory standards.

Do Preceptors have to complete the Preceptor e-compendium if completing in house Preceptor training?

It is recommended that all preceptors are given mandatory training to standardise their approach to supervising preceptees. This includes Preceptors undertaking the Multi-professional Preceptor e-compendium training provided by the Learning Hub at NHS England.

Access via the NHS Learning Hub.

Organisations could use this eLearning to support their in-house Preceptor training with regards to including the topics for action learning groups and include further skills based training to support preceptors in their role.

How can I keep a track of preceptors who have accessed and completed the e- compendium?

Organisations are able to access the training as AICC links which enables links with organisational eLearning so you that completion and compliance can be monitored.

Please follow this AICC link, chose the Multi-Professional Preceptor e-compendium programme from the report and follow the guidance to obtain the links.

The NHSE standards say for monthly hour-long meetings. CapitalAHP standards said for 5 meetings across a year which is a big difference. What is the reasoning for this please and could supervision meetings account for some of this recommendation instead of preceptorship meetings? Standards 5.3 (1 week to meet preceptor from transition) and 5.4 (minimum 1 hour meeting per month) I feel may be quite challenging to meet and 5.4 seems a bit rigid is there any support and guidance around meeting these?

The NHS England AHP Preceptorship Standards and Framework were developed through wide research, engagement and review of practice across England.

The recommendation for best practice is for the following Standards:

5.3 The initial preceptorship meeting occurs within the first week of the preceptee’s transition.

5.4 Meetings between preceptor and preceptee are scheduled once per month as a minimum.

5.5 Meetings between preceptor and preceptee are of a minimum of one hour in duration.

Regarding supervision the HCPC advises that preceptorship is different to practice/clinical supervision in that supervision tends to be focused on one area or issue and is often provided or used by registrants seeking to improve their skills or advance their careers, rather than at points of transition.
