Dom’s story

On National Supported Internship Day 2023 (March 27) we are celebrating the contributions and achievements of some of our supported interns.

Dominic Cain is autistic and has pushed boundaries to become the first Project Choice graduate to become a workplace mentor to new students completing internship placements in his workplace.

Project Choice is a supported internship and study programme that has supported over 600 young people since 2005. The programme engages NHS Trusts and community-based employers to support young people to engage in meaningful learning and employment. As part of the programme Project Choice trains staff as workplace mentors to support students on placement.

Dominic graduated Project Choice graduate in 2018 and successfully gained full time employment as a porter with NTH Solutions, a subsidiary company of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. After a turbulent time after mainstream education, Dominic has full time consistent employment, owns his own home, is in successful relationship and is a role model for new Project Choice interns. Dominic has worked at the trust for four years and expressed an interest in becoming a mentor for the new students. He has taken them under his wing to introduce them to the workplace and be a central contact should they have any issues or concerns.

“Dom’s journey speaks for itself. During his time at school the education system failed him, and his attendance was very poor. He felt he couldn’t engage with the curriculum. Once he was at Project Choice he excelled vocationally and blew everyone away with his practical skills. His attendance whilst at Project Choice was exemplary because he was motivated by his work placement and keen to develop his skills. He is absolutely incredible” Stephanie Walker, Project Choice Regional Manager.

Senior operations manager at NTH Solutions Natalie Wintersgill said “We are always receiving wonderful feedback and compliments about Dominic. He is so caring and hardworking we are lucky to have him as part of our team.”
