DEMEC 2023

The enhance national team attended the Developing Excellence in Medical Education Conference (DEMEC) at the beginning of December. The theme of the 2-day conference for medical educators was ‘Education in the wider context – the patient, the team and the global community’.

The work of enhance as well as the wider concept of generalist training was prominent throughout the programme, with a plenary talk by Professor Roger Strasser focusing on how a Generalist Career Pathway for undergraduate trainees could meet rural population health needs in Canada.

National and regional enhance teams presented their work through several posters and workshops. These showcased the innovative ways in which the enhance curriculum was being embedded in different locations to fit local population need.

Workshops on the development of longitudinal clerkships in the East of England and multiprofessional generalist programmes in North Cumbria highlighted how these programmes had been developed and delivered from conception, whilst the national enhance workshop on evaluation methods addressed the challenges of demonstrating impact on such a varied programme.

The enhance display stand allowed educators to experience the VR educational materials which provide practical experience of enhance domains.

DEMEC provided an opportunity to showcase how far the enhance programme and regional trailblazers have come in developing new educational opportunities for our health and care workforce. It also gave valuable insight into the potential for future directions, opportunities and partnerships so the programme can continue to grow and evolve to fit the needs of our everchanging health and care environment.
