North East and Yorkshire: Multi-professional Supervision: Growing educator capability and confidence (primary care)

Introduction

Project aims:

  1. To raise awareness of multiprofessional training available to pharmacists, first contact practitioners (FCPs) and advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs) who would like to supervise healthcare professionals’ training to become independent prescribers.
  2. Accessing and utilising the multiprofessional supervision training Roadmap Supervision Training, to understand elements that could be used to support non-medical prescribers (NMPs) undertaking the role of a designated prescribing practitioner (DPP) for a pharmacist.

Project lead contacts: Gill Risby (g.risby@nhs.net) Pharmacy Integration Programme Manager and David Claxton (David.Claxton@hee.nhs.uk), Primary Care School.

Local challenges

  • Recognised need to provide supervisors for community pharmacists - insights into sector-specific training, with appropriate support identified
  • Raising awareness of the urgent need for multi-professional supervision, in the context of ACPs in primary care – recognised need to develop broader educator and clinical supervision skills
  • Gaining an understanding of recognised core terminology around supervision

Novel intervention

  • Access to pharmacists to FCP Roadmap Supervision Training was enabled, to understand development needs for pharmacist supervision and understand the challenges and exposure to level of primary care multi-professional supervision
  • Consideration given to the quality of assessment and feedback of cases the pharmacists were likely to encounter, multi-professional frameworks of clinical practice from FCP to ACP, and feasible models of support
  • Observation and participation of experienced clinical educators, to understand FCP Roadmap process and what may work – including the level of experience required by the supervisor. For example, a hospital pharmacist may want to supervise a primary care colleague within generalist clinic settings

  • Pre-requisites for all educational supervisors are defined for example, Pharmacy Educational Supervisor
  • Considerations are being discussed around who can supervise who, and consistency in approach, including terminology
  • Learning the landscape of multi-professional supervision frameworks for example, FCP, ACP Roadmaps.
