Walking in my shoes

Our London RePAIR team has been working alongside student nurses and midwives and Sinead Mehigan, associate programme director at north central London (NCL) integrated care service (ICS) to create a new resource to help improve student retention in London.

Creating the 'Walking in my shoes' resource:

In 2022 listening events were held with healthcare students and clinicians from across the NCL ICS. A key point raised from these sessions was a perception that qualified staff did not fully understand or remember what it felt like to be a healthcare student on placement. Both students and clinician felt a better understanding might improve the way in which students are supported in practice, and contribute to a better learning environment.

The listening events also concluded that it would be beneficial for clinicians to also produce a similar resource, explaining what it felt like to be a clinician support students.

The student resource was co-created by students from all fields of nursing, midwifery and allied health professions contributed to this resource. The clinician resource was co-created by clinicians across the NCL ICS and London.
