Meet Omar a trainee nursing associate at the University of Chester.

Ahmed Omar MahmoudMy career journey...

I am currently a trainee nursing associate (TNA) in my second year at the University of Chester.

Before pursuing a career in nursing, I worked as a healthcare assistant for five years, this gave me valuable experience in the field and opened doors for me to undertake an apprenticeship in nursing. Having studied in Italy, I needed to complete my English functional skills at level two prior to starting my apprenticeship.

In Italy I was working as a qualified accountant. At the time I thought accounting was the career I wanted, but after working as a healthcare assistance I saw the impact healthcare professionals have on people’s life. The sense of reward and fulfilment which comes from being able to make a difference in someone’s life was what ultimately drew me to pursue a career in nursing.

I am enjoying my studies and I am excited to continue growing and learning as a TNA. I have a passion for helping others and I am committed to making a positive impact on the lives of the patients I care for.

What I love about my TNA programme...

One thing I love most about the TNA programme is the hands-on nature of the training. It provides lots of opportunities to practice and enhance my skills while also allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. Additionally, being a TNA allows me to work alongside experienced healthcare professionals, which is an invaluable learning opportunity. I also appreciate the sense of community and teamwork within the program, as we are working towards the same goal and are focussed on providing high-quality patient care.

Why I am proud to be a TNA...

As someone who values helping others, being able to play a role in improving the health and wellbeing of patients is incredibly rewarding. Knowing I contribute to a larger effort to provide compassionate and effective care is a source of pride for me.

My future ambitions...

I am keeping an open mind about where my future in healthcare will take me, there are so many opportunities within the field. I am excited to see where my journey takes me, and I am committed to continuing learning and growing within the field.

About me:

My spare time...

I like to keep myself busy. I recently started at the gym to stay fit and healthy. I also work bank shifts at the hospital to further my skills and experience in healthcare. When I am not working or exercising, I enjoy travelling to different places with my girlfriend, both locally and abroad. We often visit my family in Italy. Shopping is another favourite pastime of mine, as I love finding new fashion items to add to my collection. When it comes to entertainment, I’m a big fan of Peaky Blinders! I also enjoy listening to Italian music.

Looking after my mental wellbeing...

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for looking after one’s mental wellbeing, and for me, traveling is my way of doing that. I can take a break from work and let go of any worries. Traveling also helps me gain new perspectives and insights, which can be beneficial for my personal growth and development.

To others wanting to take a similar career path, or currently on the same path, be resilient, show initiative and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. It is important to remember the field can be challenging at times, but with hard work and dedication, it can be incredibly rewarding. I highly recommend this career path to anyone who is passionate about helping others and making a positive impact on people’s lives.
