Charlene Smith

Meet Charlene, an adult nursing student at Liverpool John Moores University.

Charlene SmithMy career journey...

I am a mother of four and a full-time carer for a disabled young adult. Prior to starting my adult nursing course, I volunteered at my children’s school. This helped me to realise I wanted to pursue a career in nursing as I am passionate about helping people in any way I can and to do so during difficult times in their lives is such a privilege.

Why I love being a student nurse...

My favourite thing about being a student nurse is getting to work alongside a diverse range of students and staff, giving me the chance to learn about different cultures and ways of doing things. I also love getting to experience different areas of nursing. It is such a vast profession and I have still barely scratched the surface as to where my career can take me.

About me:

My spare time...

Being a mum, full-time carer, student mentor and cohort representative means I don’t have a lot of spare time, but I will always ensure I take time for myself, whether half hour crocheting (thanks to you-tube for the assistance) or a nice pamper, it is vital to recharge myself so I can give the best to others. I also love music, popping on headphones and dancing around the house, being judged by my many dogs, thankfully they are harder to embarrass than my children.

My advice for someone wanting to take a similar career path...

The advice I would give to anyone considering a career in nursing is to research first, make sure you fully understand what is expected of you as both a student and professional. Go to as many open days at universities as you can. Ensuring you go to the right university for you is paramount. I would also recommend that if there are any issues speak out. As an adult learner you need to ensure you get the support you need, there is so much available if you seek it. The same goes for practice placements, if something isn’t right be the one who helps change it.

And finally, manage your work-life balance. It is essential to avoid burn-out so be organised. I have diaries, calendars and noticeboards galore. There is so much to juggle so make it easier on yourself, and don’t forget your you time. Remember we are all in this together, one massive team here to help each other.
