Cynthia K Dhliwayo

Meet Cynthia, a mental health nursing student at the University of Chester.

Cynthia K DhliwayoMy career journey, so far...

Years ago I was a Healthcare Assistant, then in 2013 I joined the miliatry as a chef. In 2020 I decided to leave the Forces to pursue my career in nursing after missing working in close contact with patients and the job satisfaction I felt when I worked in the healthcare field.

What I enjoy most about my studies...

I have enjoyed my placements as I have had the opportunity to learn a lot from healthcare professionals.

My future ambitions...

In the future I might look to become an advanced nurse practitioner and a nurse prescriber.

My advice for someone wanting to take a similar career path...

Take each day as it come and stand up and speak when you feel something is not right.

Your mental health matters, value it, there is only one of you!

Reach out to others on your cohort, set up group chats that will allow you to have regular communication with your peers, I do not know how I would have gone through my course without our group chat, it has been my place of comfort when days have been hard.

About me:

What I do with my spare time...

Those who know me like to call me a foodie, I like going to different restaurants and trying diverse kinds of foods from different cultures. I also enjoy going to the cinema and hiking when weather allows.

My book recommendations...

I am a slow reader, but it is something I enjoy. My favourite novel is Purple Hibiscus, which I have read at least three times now ha!

My feel-good song...

I do not have a specific go to song, but music is my place of sanity after I have had a difficult day at work. My two favourite genres are Amapiano (which originates from South Africa) and Afro Beats, however, I will listen to anything!

Looking after my mental wellbeing...

I am a strong believer in the fact that every day will not be a good day, however when days are good, embrace it and enjoy it, and, when the not so good days do come by get through it knowing good days are just around the corner!
