Trainee pharmacists take part in paediatric virtual clinical session
24 February 2023
Trainee pharmacists recently took part in a virtual clinical session on paediatrics, led by Sukhraj Uppal, senior pharmacist from Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Trainee pharmacists had an opportunity to practice calculating drug doses in the paediatric population and were able to improve their knowledge of the principles behind formulation adjustments and any relevant pharmaceutical considerations. The expert discussed the pharmacokinetics in the paediatric population and explained the key resources for pharmacists who care for paediatric patients. Trainee pharmacists were asked what learning and changes they will implement in their workplace following the session. Here is what some of the trainees said:
- Taking into consideration rounding doses and when it’s not appropriate.
- Double check calculations.
- Knowing where to look for specialist paediatric guidelines.
- I will have a better understanding of the key issues if I come across a paediatric chart or query.
- Using common sense when I look at a dose - think first dose it look correct off the top of my head before going into checking it.
- Be confident double-checking people. Ask people for help if needed. Know where to go for more information.
- I'm going to find out which method our Trust use for Creatinine Clearance in children.
