Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus virtual clinical session

24 March 2023

In March 2023, following stakeholder feedback, the Midlands Foundation Pharmacy team coordinated and delivered an additional virtual clinical session to the Midlands trainee pharmacists focussing on Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

The session was delivered by the expert Lead Pharmacist for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Rosamund Bell of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, with the focus of the session covering the following:

  1. To recall and discuss the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 DM
  1. To demonstrate awareness of the symptoms of diabetic emergencies
  1. To demonstrate an awareness of the pharmacological measures that can be employed with consideration of evidence base for the management of diabetic emergencies including Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycaemic State (HHS)
  1. To analyse glucose monitoring for patients and evaluate trends to adjust insulin doses and understand how the pharmacokinetic profile influence choice of insulin
  1. To demonstrate an awareness of insulin biosimilars and medication safety in reducing insulin errors

A selection of feedback comments from trainee pharmacists on the most positive aspects of the session:

“The Whole session was useful, I don’t encounter T1DM often and had never come across HHS”.

“The expert speaker, and the session was very interesting to listen to and kept us engaged with interactive polls and the slides with suggested answers was informative”.

“I liked the way each group was asked to work on specific questions rather than all the cases. It meant that there was enough time to discuss it and complete the allocated cases.

"The polls were good and the rapid questions at the end”.

“Really good session, best yet!”

Feedback from the expert speaker on collaborating with HEE to create the learning and teaching materials for this session:

“I have really been impressed working with Krishna Shingadia (Training Programme Facilitator) to create this session to ensure it meets the needs of the trainee pharmacists in their foundation year”.
