1 December 2022

Launch of north west imaging academy

The official launch of the North West Imaging Training Academy was held at Edgehill University on Thursday 24 November with academy stakeholders and imaging community coming together for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

The academy has commenced delivery of high-quality training to the region’s Imaging workforce as a major contributor to ensuring service users receive a first-class experience from beginning to end of their treatment journey.

The academy launch was hosted by Dr John Howells, the academy’s Clinical Advisor and presentations were delivered by a host of clinicians involved in the formation of the academy and its future ambitions.

Patient advocate, Laura Mahon and her husband Daniel Mahon formally opened the academies clinical skills and simulation centre. Laura age 30, shared her personal patient journey, describing how when 20 weeks pregnant with her daughter Sienna, she woke up and could not move her toes. An MRI scan later revealed that she had a terminal glioblastoma (GBM) brain tumour, which required several rounds of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. Laura reinforced the importance of the work being done by the academy and the impact it will have on future patients. Read more about Laura’s story and donate to her charity appeal here

The academy is a positive education model that will transform Imaging training and collaboration in the region. The academy is supported by Health Education England, NHS England, Northern Care Alliance, North West School of Radiology, Alder Hey Children’s NHS FT, Bolton NHS FT, East Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS FT, Manchester University NHS FT, St Helens & Knowsley, Edgehill University, Cumbria University and Salford University and the University of Liverpool.
