International Medical Graduates conference

9 May 2023

Speaker in conference settingApproximately 200 postgraduate doctors in training, locally employed doctors, SAS doctors, consultants, education team and managers joined us at our first South West International Medical Graduates (IMG) conference last month, organised by our Associate Deans, Eng Ong and Claire Fox, with the support of Professional Education & Development team.

The conference was an opportunity to reconnect, network, share challenges, and celebrate achievements with the aim to bring healthcare education and practice together to develop the workforce of the future.

With the significant increase of ethnically diverse doctors and IMG doctors in training (DiT) in the south west, according to GMC workforce data, the conference focused on the following learning outcomes:

  • Explore the challenges and opportunities of the diverse workforce.
  • Understand differential attainment and the importance of levelling up medical education.
  • Share good practices e.g., IMG induction and promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Explore alternative career pathways.
  • Develop skills as an active bystander and in psychological safety.

The team will continue to make IMGs its primary area of focus as one element within the differential attainment agenda. We aim to level up medical education under the key domains of the WT&E (HEE) Quality Framework.
