Non-HEE complaint mechanisms
To complain about the quality of NHS clinical care received in a hospital:
- You should initially submit your complaint to the hospital Trust; or
- You can submit your complaint to the local clinical commissioning group that is responsible for that hospital;
- If the resolution is unsatisfactory you can escalate your complaint to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman.
To complain about the quality of NHS clinical care received at a dental practice:
- You should initially submit your complaint to the dental practice; or
- You can submit your complaint to NHS England who are responsible for commissioning NHS services at that practice;
- If the resolution is unsatisfactory you can escalate your complaint to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman.
To complain about the quality of NHS clinical care received at a GP surgery:
- You should initially submit your complaint directly to the GP surgery; or
- You can submit your complaint to NHS England who are responsible for commissioning NHS services at that surgery;
- If the resolution is unsatisfactory you can escalate your complaint to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman.
To complain about an individual doctor’s competence, conduct or behaviour:
- You should initially discuss and submit your complaint to the doctor’s employer;
- If you are not sure who the doctor’s employer is, or if you are unsatisfied with the response from the employer, or if you believe your complaint to be significantly serious, you can complain to the medical regulator, the General Medical Council.
To complain about an individual dentist’s competence, conduct or behaviour:
- You should initially discuss and submit your complaint to the dentist’s employer;
- If you are not sure who the dentist’s employer is, or if you are unsatisfied with the response from the employer, or if you believe your complaint to be significantly serious, you can complain to the dental regulator, the General Dental Council.
To complain about an individual nurse’s or midwife’s competence, conduct or behaviour:
- You should initially discuss and submit your complaint to the individual’s employer;
- If you are not sure who their employer is, or if you are unsatisfied with the response from the employer, or if you believe your complaint to be significantly serious, you can complain to the nursing regulator, the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
To raise a concern about the quality of clinical care provided by your employer (whistleblowing):
- You should submit a confidential whistleblowing concern through the local mechanisms provided by your employer; or
- You can escalate your concerns to the prescribed person as defined by the Public Interest Disclosure legislation
To complain about NHS education and training matters in Wales:
- You can submit a complaint through Wales Deanery
To complain about NHS education and training matters in Scotland:
- You can submit a complaint through NHS Education for Scotland (NES)
To complain about NHS education and training matters in Northern Ireland:
- You can submit a complaint through Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA)
