Our leaders

At HEE, we work nationally and locally. You can view our overarching structure of the HEE Executive Team on the main HEE page. Locally, we are led by our Local Director, Alex Glover, who is supported by the Local Executive Team. 

Alex Glover

Local Director

Alex was appointed local director in October 2014. Prior to this Alex was head of finance for us and previously at the North East Strategic Health Authority.

Alex is a qualified accountant with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and worked in finance in the NHS for over 16 years until moving into her current role.

Namita Kumar

Postgraduate Dean

After qualifying as a doctor from Liverpool University, Namita moved to the north east of England after completing her house officer year. In the north east she completed her medical training, obtaining her post as a consultant rheumatologist and physician in 2006.

Involvement in medical education started in 1997 with activities including Royal College of Physician (London) Trainees' Committee, Education, Training and Standards Board and as a written examiner as part of the MRCP (UK) Standard Setting Group. In 2003 she was appointed as a board member of the Postgraduate Medical and Education Training Board by the Secretary of State for Health, and asked to complete two further terms. After merger of PMETB with the GMC in 2010, she was appointed as foundation school director for Northern Deanery. In 2013 she was appointed to the post of postgraduate dean for Health Education England in the north east. She was made an Honorary Clinical Professor by Durham University in May 2014.

Derek Marshall

Chief Workforce Strategist and Planner

Derek leads the development of strategy across all key areas for workforce development ensuring that it incorporates provider organisations; NHS England, Public Health England and other key priorities, reflecting the long-term strategic needs of the system.

He provides leadership for the workforce planning and analysis function and for the non-medical education and training contracts with universities and other education providers.  Derek has a background in workforce planning and strategy development, including working in a range of NHS organisations and a spell in the Department of Health.

Michelle Roach

Strategic Finance Lead

Michelle was appointed Strategic Finance Lead in April 2015. Prior to this Michelle was finance programme manager with us and previously at the North East Strategic Health Authority.

Michelle is a qualified accountant with the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants and has a Masters in Applied Financial Management. Michelle has held a variety of finance roles for both the private sector and the NHS for over 20 years until moving into her current role.

Jill Cassells

Head of Operations

Jill joined the NHS through the NHS Gateway to Leadership Scheme in 2009.  She brought extensive senior management knowledge and experience from private sector, and has used her skills to help to support the strategy and direction of workforce and the way we manage business. 

Jill has held various roles across workforce. In her current position as Head of Operations, she supports the executive in the day to day management of the local office, but has specific interests in the Faculty of Patient Safety, Quality, Performance Management and the delivery of high quality education and training to trainees as well as our own staff.  Jill represents the organisation on various national groups and projects, across a broad portfolio including leading on the information strategy for the north. 

Malcolm Smith

Postgraduate Dental Dean

Malcolm is the Postgraduate Dental Dean working across the north east and north Cumbria. He is trained in management, practice appraisal, clinical audit and mentoring and has provided training on Clinical Governance, Personal and Professional Development Planning and Health and Safety for both dentists and dental care professionals.  He is lead for the COPDEND project to introduce Satisfactory Completion of Dental Foundation Training.

Malcolm spent nearly thirty years as a General Dental Practitioner in the NHS, including eighteen years in his own practice in Darlington which he sold to concentrate on dental education and management. He has been a trainer, a Training Programme Director and Associate Dental Dean in Primary Care.  He was also Dental Advisor for Teesside from 1991 to 2011.
