Systems Leadership Labs
Following the success of the three Systems Leadership Labs which ran in Yorkshire and the Humber January-March 2016, we are hosting more in 2017.
Using the work of Barry Oshry, each Systems Leadership Lab will help participants understand and effectively navigate the challenges and dynamics faced when working in complex systems.
The workshops will benefit anyone currently facing the challenges of partnership working and integration, and NHS staff who want to gain a better understanding of the culture in their organisation.
We are excited to announce three additional dates for the popular Systems Leadership Labs in 2016/17.
The learning laboratories enable leaders to explore how productive partnership and systems working can be developed and sustained within their own context. They are dynamic, high impact, experimental learning events, in which we create real organisational systems in the room.

These System Leadership Labs provide an intensive short-cut to help Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) leaders jointly shape a climate of innovation and partnership, in which their carefully formulated plans can become a transforming reality.
All people with STP involvement are welcome to attend, and registration is open to all NHS colleagues with an interest in this area.
About the workshops
We talk a lot about Systems Leadership, but what does this really mean? How do we extend and develop our leadership behaviour and mindset to influence the wider system alongside our organisational responsibilities? This Learning Laboratory enables you to really explore how productive partnership and systems working can be developed and sustained within your own context. It is a dynamic, high impact, experiential learning event, in which we create a real organisational system in the room.
During the morning, we’ll experience typical power dynamics and we’ll uncover why systems leadership is often really tricky. So much seems to get in the way – not least hierarchies, differing agendas, organisational identities and disempowering cultures.
We will work together to build a shared understanding of leading across systems and in the afternoon we will focus on translating this into practice in your own contexts.
The Systems Leadership Lab will equip you, your colleagues and partners to:
- enhance your collective leadership effectiveness
- relate to partner agencies, service users and colleagues more effectively
- jointly raise the quality of services
- together improve client and employee satisfaction
- collectively deliver better value for money
Developing Systems Leadership Brochure
The brouchure describes a way of understanding ‘Systems Leadership’.
It aims to be the starting point of a conversation between those charged with bringing the Five Year Forward View into reality via the implementation of the Sustainability and Transformation Plans and the Leadership Development Partners of the NHS Leadership Academy who can support developing the capacity and capability of leaders needing to work across organisational boundaries in a complex and ever changing environment.
