Today marks two years since the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) opened up their register to qualified nursing associates.

Welcoming the news, James McLean, Deputy Chief Nurse, Health Education England said:

“In two short years, it is great that over 2,700 nursing associates have joined the NMC register.  Nursing Associates are making a real impact in the delivery of healthcare in both health and social care settings across England. We value the amazing contribution they make working as part of a team alongside registered nurses and Allied Health professionals.

Our ongoing focus will be on working closely with our partners to develop, promote and highlight the benefits that this key role can deliver to health teams and patients alike. "

Dr Navina Evans, Chief Executive, Health Education England said:

"It is fantastic to see how far this role has come in such a short space of time. Nursing Associates are firmly established as a key part of healthcare teams. As we celebrate this milestone, I want to say a big thank you to NAs for their hard work and to all those who continue to show such strong support for this important role. “

The Nursing Associate role was introduced to help build the capacity of the nursing workforce and the delivery of high-quality care. It is a vital part of the wider health and care teams. It provides career progression for health care support workers, it is a role within its own right and a progression route to registered nurse for those wishing to pursue this.
