Healthcare evidence and knowledge now a simple search away

24 January 2022

Health Education England (HEE) has launched a new online search platform to give NHS staff and learners access to the latest research findings along with decades of published evidence – all in one place.

The NHS Knowledge and Library Hub is a ‘one-stop’ national gateway which, for the first time nationally, connects staff and learners seamlessly to a wide range of knowledge and evidence resources, services and databases – bought on their behalf by the NHS.

This means staff only need to search this platform to find evidence and answers to the questions they face, rather than scouring multiple resources.

The platform includes:

  • thousands of journals
  • books, reports and e-publications, including OUP handbooks and textbooks
  • high quality open access content
  • clinical decision support tools such as BMJ Best Practice
  • NICE pathways and guidelines
  • databases like Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL and PsycInfo
  • one-click access to full-text, request a copy or contact an NHS library

It is anticipated that the range of content will grow significantly and at pace over the coming months.

Sue Lacey-Bryant, National Lead for NHS Library and Knowledge Services at HEE, said:

“NHS staff make millions of health and care decisions every single week – and the challenge of ensuring these decisions are based on up-to-date knowledge married with decades of evidence and research is being met head-on by the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

“Whether searching for published knowledge and evidence for patient care, management decision-making, education, research, or just professional curiosity, the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub is set to become the starting point for every search - powering the bright minds of health staff, students and trainees and ensuring they can be confident that the care they deliver is based on the most up-to-date information possible.

“Offering an intuitive search experience for both quick and in-depth study, the platform provides access to nationally and locally funded knowledge and evidence resources.”

Users can access the hub via their one-time-registration NHS OpenAthens account. This means that, once they have signed in, they can tap into the same system wherever their career takes them.
