HEE backs Trans Awareness Week

16 November 2020

Health Education England is backing Trans Awareness Week, which starts today, by renewing its pledge to embed the best possible inclusive practice.

In line with its commitment to be the Best Place to Work, HEE is taking the necessary steps to build a culture that is transparent, diverse, inclusive and welcoming to trans and non-binary colleagues. We have signed up as Stonewall Diversity Champions and will submit each year to the Workplace Equality Index, which celebrates the Top 100 organisations in the UK that are LGBTQI+ inclusive.

Dr Navina Evans, Chief Executive, Health Education England, said:

“It is absolutely essential to making HEE the Best Place to Work that our culture ensures trans and non-binary colleagues feel safe and supported to be their whole selves at work, without fear of being treated differently because of how they identify.

"To me, it is vital always to come back to the basics of building empathy for the idea that we want our fellow colleagues to experience a dignified and positive life, and there are things that we can change to make that more likely. This week we are proud to celebrate Trans Awareness Week at HEE and use this opportunity to educate ourselves on how we can be better allies to our trans colleagues.”

HEE has recently published guidance on how to be trans ally which can be found here- https://www.hee.nhs.uk/about/our-values
