South West Endoscopy Training Academy (SWETA)

Development of the South West Endoscopy Training Academy began in April 2021, an early adopter of the programme, with an operational model that is based on a sustainable academy model that has been developed to meet the regional needs of the South West.

The Endoscopy Training Academies have the potential to provide greater health system value than traditional education models as they:

  • Enable training and supervision capacity to be expanded quickly and much more cost effectively.
  • Enable innovation in training through rapid at-scale adoption of technology enhanced learning and new multi-disciplinary learning models.
  • Accelerate independent working and service delivery productivity of trainees.
  • Enable more geographical equity in the distribution of training and hence the health professional workforce.

The academy provides training to the whole workforce, including nurses and support staff in a multi-disciplinary environment. SWETA has been designed locally in collaboration with local endoscopy networks and service providers sharing common principles with other regional training academies such as regional education and training provision, inclusion of intensive training support, upskilling opportunities, and dedicated learning environments.

SWETA Academy Vision

The vision for the Academy is threefold:

  • To elevate the South West’s reputation as a region of excellence for endoscopy training and practice.
  • Through training and education, enhance the quality of the patients’ experience in the region in all aspects of their pathway.
  • Through workforce planning and training, ensure that the SW has a resilient future endoscopy workforce .

The aim of SWETA is to ensure that training and education for all endoscopy staff (including admin, nursing, endoscopy trainees and independent endoscopist) is enhanced thereby increasing the resilience of the future workforce in the region.

SWETA has focused on 4 key workstreams that form a multi-disciplinary endoscopy workforce and reflect the whole patient pathway: Trainees (Gastroenterology, Surgical and trainee endoscopists), Administrative and Clerical Staff, Endoscopy Nurse Workforce and Independent Endoscopists.

SW Endoscopy Training Academy Educational Offer

The aim of this SWETA  is to ensure provision of sustainable training capacity for SW NHS Trusts to provide a pipeline of trained Endoscopy workforce to meet the demands of the SW region. SWETA is developing a blended learning approach across the key workstreams (Endoscopy trainees, Nursing Workforce, Independent Endoscopists and Endoscopy administration).
