Webinar 2 - Building appropriate confidence in AI to enable safe and ethical adoption

Date: Tuesday 1 February 2022 - 12:00 – 12:45

Booking: Register for this session now!

Overview: Safe, effective and ethical adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in healthcare relies on confidence in using AI products. For clinicians it is vital to establish an appropriate level of confidence in each AI prediction used in clinical decision making. Underlying this, robust implementation and evaluation of high quality, validated products is necessary to establish a baseline of confidence in the performance, safety and fairness of algorithms.

HEE and NHSX have collaborated on a report, which will be published in early 2022, outlining the educational needs of NHS healthcare professionals, through a detailed understanding of how we build confidence in the use of AI algorithms.  The report explores three layers of confidence (baseline, implementation and clinical use) and relates them to questions which should be asked by healthcare professionals (HCPs) at each stage of the AI pathway, from procurement to roll-out and clinical use.

For HCPs to ask the right questions and correctly appraise the answers, they must be confident in their own skills and knowledge of AI for healthcare.  We describe the HCP workforce using 5 archetypes: Shapers, Drivers, Creators, Embedders and Users, discussing the roles and key educational requirements for each workforce group.

Presenters:

  • Dr Maxine Mackintosh (Chair) - Programme Lead - Diversity, Genomics England
  • Dr Hatim Abdulhussein - Clinical Lead of DART-Ed Programme, Health Education England

Webinar 1 - Digital, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics across the system - an introduction

The first webinar took place on 18 November 2021 providing an introduction to the work of Health Education England’s DART-Ed programme. We looked at the wider landscape of activity across the system, particularly the work of our partners, including NHSX, and examining what the main issues, barriers and benefits are in implementing these technologies with an opportunity for participants to ask our expert panel questions and find out more.

On the panel were:

  • Patrick Mitchell (Chair) - Director of Innovation, Digital and Transformation, Health Education England
  • Dr Hatim Abdulhussein - Clinical Lead of DART-Ed Programme, Health Education England
  • Richard Price - Project Manager, Technology Enhanced Learning, Health Education England
  • Brhmie Balaram - Head of AI Research & Ethics, NHS AI Lab, NHSX
