Leadership in healthcare pre-registration

Maximising Leadership Development in the Healthcare Pre-Registration Student Curricula: Guidelines for Education Providers

Health Education England has published guidelines for healthcare education providers on how best to integrate leadership learning in the pre-registration clinical healthcare curricula – putting leadership development as a core component of all health professional education.

The purpose of the guidance is to support healthcare education providers to develop curricula that drives the learning of leadership for all pre-registration clinical healthcare students, directly supporting the ambitions of the NHS leadership and improvement framework Developing People, Improving Care.

The guidelines were developed with a series of questions in mind, which were tested in an ambitious longitudinal collaborative research study which took place between 2015 and 2016:

  • What if every newly qualified healthcare professional graduated already thinking as a leader?
  • What if they all entered our healthcare services with the seamless ability to inclusively connect to and lead a diversity of people, equipped with a practical toolbox of improvement skills to lead change?
  • What would our healthcare service be like in 20 years’ time? What difference would this make to how our communities experience the care that we provide? What would healthcare become?

Ambitious outcomes from the research results motivated our aspiration to co-design a national evidence-based set of guidelines to support healthcare education providers to maximise leadership learning in the pre-registration clinical healthcare curricula. We developed these guidelines during 2017 and 2018 in partnership with education providers, NHS people development professionals and national bodies.

We invite healthcare education partners to explore and utilise the guidelines, and engage with us in partnership as part of our long-term implementation phase as follows:

We have developed this web page to house our guidelines and other related resources as they are developed. These are available within our related documents section (footer of page).

Survey feedback
Tell us what you think of the guidelines by completing the survey. The survey will run until 9th November 2018.

Be part of our national implementation steering group
Following our launch event and in our continued co-design philosophy, we will develop a national steering group of health education leaders to support us in evaluating, enhancing and creating national resources that enable successful implementation of the guidelines over a 5 year cycle.
