National Autism Trainer Programme
NHS England has commissioned Anna Freud and AT-Autism to provide autism training for staff working in mental health services, residential special schools and youth justice services. As a result, staff and experts by experience will be equipped to train new and existing colleagues working across these settings.
Following on from the successful pilots in 2021/22 and as part of our commitment to improving the skills and knowledge of the workforce to better support autistic people, we are continuing to support the National Autism Trainer Programme.
The NATP, led by Anna Freud and AT-Autism, has been co-produced and co-delivered with autistic people and is based on the Core Capabilities Framework for Supporting Autistic People. It delivers a train-the-trainer model, which means staff who complete the training will then go on to co-deliver a contextualised version of the training back in their workplace with an expert with lived experience of autism.
Trainers will also be supported through a range of support, resources and communities of practice by Anna Freud and AT-Autism.
This training course is available for staff in England who currently work or may work with diagnosed or undiagnosed autistic people from the following settings:
- Adults, children and young people in inpatient mental health hospitals
- Adults, children and young people in community mental health
- Health and justice
- Residential special schools and colleges
National Autism Trainer Programme is additional and complementary to The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.
