Cardiovascular disease, stroke and respiratory disease

Our aim is to support the identification and creation of a standardised national and regional system reporting mechanism for the cardiovascular, stroke and respiratory workforce. This will help us look at workforce in terms of where we are now and what we need in future to fill workforce gaps.

The NHS Long Term Plan set outs the ambitions for the NHS over the next 10 years, identifying cardiovascular disease, stroke and respiratory disease as a clinical priority. It outlines how we will work with partners to improve stroke care along the full pathway from symptom onset to ongoing care (partners include the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS England/NHS Improvement, Public Health England, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and others). This work includes prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Meeting the ambitions in the Long Term Plan would result in the NHS having the best performance in Europe for people with stroke.

The plan sets the ambition for the NHS to help prevent over 150,000 heart attacks, strokes and dementia cases over the next 10 years and outlines how we, and partners, will meet this ambition. It also outlines out how we will be targeting investment to improve treatment and support for people with respiratory disease, with an ambition to transform our outcomes to equal, or better, our international counterparts.
