Physician Associates are now eligible to apply for HEE Clinical Endoscopist Training

HEE is pleased to announce a new future pipeline of workforce for Endoscopy departments across all regions of England. We are proud to have worked with the Joint Advisory Committee on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) to develop a Clinical Endoscopist Training Programme to help address the increasing demand for endoscopy services and get patients seen faster.

Physician Associates (PAs) are medically trained health professionals, formally introduced to the UK in 2003 to work alongside doctors and provide medical care as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.

Physician Associates, registered by The Royal College of Physicians as part of the managed voluntary register, will now be eligible to train to undertake either Upper GI Endoscopy or Lower GI Endoscopy, alongside registered nurses, and Allied Healthcare Professionals.

Liz Hughes HEE Medical Director and Clinical Lead for PAs said:

“PAs are already widely employed to support clinical teams by examining patients and conducting relevant diagnostic procedures. This will be a welcome opportunity for PAs wishing to develop new skills along an additional career pathway, ahead of regulation by The General Medical Council (GMC). This will also be a welcome development for NHS Endoscopy Departments facing acute workforce shortages, ahead of key targets from NHS England for elective and cancer recovery.”

The next cohorts will commence on Tuesday 21st February 2023 and Monday 27th February 2023.

All academic modules are delivered online with minimal contact days away from your trust. We accept new applicants and those from clinical endoscopists with previous experience.

Physician Associates on the Managed Voluntary Register are now eligible, subject to employer agreement, to apply for endoscopist training for 2023, ahead of GMC regulation.

Further information about the programme can be found on our Clinical Endoscopist Training Programme Webpage. Managers wishing to put forward a Physician Associate, Nurse or other Health Care Professional can submit an online expressions of interest to HEE until Friday 2nd December 2022.
