What if you are unsuccessful? feedback!

If you are unsuccessful there’s a few key things to remember:

• Take the positives- if you got an interview in the first place there’s a very good chance the recruiter thought you could do the job
• The job market is very competitive and there are sometimes hundreds of applicants for each job
• Getting an interview is an achievement itself so don’t become despondent - you are doing something right

However, you’ve got an opportunity now to learn from your experience- always ask for feedback from the recruiter.

Ask some questions:

• What did I do well?
• Where could I improve?
• What was I missing?
• What could I do differently next time?

Some tips:

• Listen with an open mind – feedback is a gift. Recruiters are busy people so appreciate the time taken to help you.
• Even if you don’t agree with it, don’t become argumentative or confrontational - you won’t change the decision.
• Leave the door open - you never know the successful person may not work out or give backword, and if you are seen as a good applicant, they may approach you instead of re-advertising the position. This happens more often than you might think!
• Use your experience to increase your chances next time – there will always be a next time!
