Call for ideas to boost support for junior doctors returning to training

29 June 2017

A call for ideas aimed at boosting the support available to returning junior doctors has been launched by Health Education England (HEE) today in its latest phase of work to improve the working lives of junior doctors.

HEE wants to explore new and innovative ways to support junior doctors who are returning to training after time out for example after maternity leave or for out of programme activities and would like to hear from junior doctors and their representative bodies, medical royal colleges and employers.

This might include new ideas to help junior doctors refresh their clinical skills and knowledge of current protocols, innovative training ideas or existing good practice that needs to be developed and tested further.

Professor Wendy Reid, Executive Director of Education and Quality & National Medical Director at Health Education England said:

We are committed to enhancing the working lives of junior doctors and building on the work we have already done to provide the best possible  education and training support and learning environment.  It is important to listen to junior doctors and continue our efforts to address the challenges they face.

The call for ideas will help us develop a programme of activities to better support junior doctors returning to training after time out and better understand the challenges experienced by doctors who return to training; and consider innovative solutions that are evidenced but perhaps as yet untested.

To take part please visit our website for more information.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 4 August.

The evidence gathered will inform an Accelerated Return to Training strategy and delivery plan, which will be published later this year.
