The CapitalNurse Preceptorship Framework for London

13 September 2017

The new CapitalNurse Preceptorship Framework provides a standard for high quality and harmonised approach to preceptorship across the capital. The resource has been launched to help all health and care organisations across London support staff with the transition from student nurses to registered practitioner.

The framework is a best practice approach to preceptorship, and was co-designed with nurses from a number of settings including newly registered nurses, directors of nursing, preceptorship and education leads and nursing academics.

The approach set out is for organisations to ‘walk’ the framework alongside their current preceptorship programme to determine how they shape their local offer.

CapitalNurse has been meeting with nurses across London to ask how they’re finding the framework. Ruth Sivanesan, Placement Development Facilitator at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, gave her first-hand account of being part of the project:

Since we started using the framework we have seen a rise in interest in preceptorship  We have undertaken work to look at what our preceptees are looking for and used this as well as the framework to enhance our programme this year.

Being part of the preceptorship project has, so far, been very positive for the organisation.  We have seen value placed on preceptorship and we are seeing improved engagement from the teams.  We are recording more names of preceptees prior to start date which is a positive step forward and increasing the sense that the preceptees feel welcome and valued.  We look forward to continuing this work with the 2017-18 cohort of preceptees.
