Derbyshire schoolgirl scoops top prize in national NHS contest

Schoolgirl Tanvir Tamber is celebrating after being named national winner in an annual competition promoting the huge range of jobs available within the NHS.

Tanvir, aged 14, beat hundreds of entrants in the Step into the NHS secondary school contest, which highlights the wealth of careers – more than 350 in all - within the health service. 

Her winning poster and accompanying video advertising the role of an accident and emergency doctor took the judges in the NHS Health Careers competition by storm. 

The pupil at Derby Moor Spencer Academy, Derby, revealed she had researched in depth to learn about a career for which she had “a genuine passion”.

“The highlight was discovering the amount of insight needed and the range of conditions you have to be able to deal with, enabling you to discover your eventual specialism,” she added.

Step into the NHS is an exciting resource and school careers competition that raises awareness of the more than 350 career opportunities in the NHS, while supporting the career aspirations of young people in education.   

As the largest employer in Europe, the NHS offers a job to suit everyone, no matter what their interests or skills are.

Dr Navina Evans, Chief Workforce, Training and Education Officer at NHS England, said: “I absolutely loved Tanvir’s creativity and obvious passion. Her project was just brilliant.

“Especially in this 75th anniversary year for the NHS, it’s great to see so much interest – and inspiration – out there for careers within the health service.

“Congratulations to Tanvir, and a huge thank you to everyone who took part.”

Tanvir wins a £50 Amazon voucher, and her winning entry will be displayed online and in the local community.

Scott Doyle, Principal at Derby Moor Spencer Academy, said: “I think the competition provides an invaluable opportunity to explore the vast range of career opportunities available within the NHS, or indeed any large institution. 

“It has been an enlightening experience for our pupils.”
