Health Education England welcomes NMC regulation of Nursing Associate role

28 September 2018

Final standards for the new nursing associate role have been agreed by the NMC’s governing Council HEE can confirm today. The standards set out the skills and knowledge nursing associates will need to know before they qualify. The new role introduced by Health Education England will also provide a training pathway to becoming a registered nurse for those nursing associates who want to further their careers.

Following huge interest HEE has already delivered 2,000 nursing associates in training, with 5,000 expected to be in post by the end of the year and 7,500 the following year.
It was a huge achievement for HEE to get this role into trusts so quickly and is great news that nursing associates will now have the appropriate regulation and support from the NMC and protected learning time in trusts.

Lisa Bayliss Pratt, Chef Nurse and Interim Regional Director London, Health Education England said:

"This is fantastic news and a testament to all those that have been involved so far in developing this role from concept to implementation.
I would like to personally thank everyone that has been involved to help make this happen, who have shown strong support for the role that HEE introduced from the beginning which is now becoming a key member of the multidisciplinary workforce across health and social care, including the new trainee nursing associates currently in post and the NMC.”

Nursing Associates will now be registered and regulated in the same way as nurses and have the relevant supervision and assessment standards, fitness to practice and standards of proficiency, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge they need to deliver the highest quality, patient centred care.
