HEE apologies for IT error

7 October 2017

Professor Sheona MacLeod, Postgraduate Dean and Chair of Health Education England’s Postgraduate Deans, HEE said:

I would like to apologise on behalf of HEE to those doctors in training who were understandably distressed by this IT error last night. We have found that 293 doctors were affected as they were emailed before the data was fully quality checked, and although a significant number of those impacted had actually received the correct information, we informed all trainees of the error. This morning, we have clarified the position with all the doctors affected. We will contact the doctors who were incorrectly told they had a place when there were no posts available.

We fully appreciate how important the issue of transfers is to our trainees. We will be instigating a full internal review into this, I have been working in the Enhancing Junior Doctor’s Working Group with doctors in training and partners across the system to address issues that affect junior doctor’s working lives, including better processes for those with caring or medical conditions. This error shows there is more to do in this area and we are committed to doing what needs to be done.
