HEE responds to GMC latest annual data and research report

21 July 2016

Professor Wendy Reid: Director of Education and Quality, Medical Director, Health Education England, said:

Health Education England welcomes this report and acknowledges the findings of the accompanying research. This work provides useful information that aligns with and builds on our priorities in the recently launched HEE Quality Framework. In particular the Quality Framework identifies specific standards including the culture of the learning environment and supporting and empowering both learners and educators to provide a transparent and consistent approach to ensuring our students and trainees have access to high quality learning environments and training.

HEE continues to actively review the professional support resources available to doctors in training at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, promoting improvement and encouraging innovative solutions both at local, regional and national level. The publication of the GMC’s Differential Attainment Report in 2015 was linked to a review of professional support services where best practice across HEE was shared. All trainees have access to professional support at a local level and increasingly access is being broadened across regions and through on-line nationally available resources such as web resources to support internationally educated health professionals. In addition we are working to use resources available to support trainees meet their curriculum requirements in a more consistent and equitable manner so that support is matched to individual learning requirements.

Currently HEE is developing an on-line resource to promote well-being amongst its trainees and other learners that will link to the HEE Quality Framework and include information for trainees and trainers on a broad range of factors that can influence the ability of trainees to achieve their full potential.

Working together with the GMC and other stakeholders including the other three UK nations, Royal Colleges and clinical placement providers, HEE is committed to understanding the complexity and interdependencies of differential attainment in order to inform solutions for all those pursuing a career in medicine. Our vision is for all to have equal opportunity for all to reach their true potential and have fulfilled careers. The beneficiaries to this approach are the patients, the medical professionals, the wider healthcare workforce and taxpayers.
