HEE responds to the recent funding reforms consultation outcome

21 July 2016

Professor Ian Cumming, Chief Executive of Health Education England, said:

As a result of these changes, HEE will continue to be responsible for ensuring the NHS has the workforce it needs and will use its investment in clinical placements to ensure not only that the NHS has the right geographical and professional range of graduates but that the NHS only recruits the best of them.

In order to ensure stability in the system, HEE will maintain the current number and distribution of clinical placements for 2017/18 and we will work with our partners to implement these reforms and ensure a smooth transition to the new system when the cap on numbers in training is lifted and funding moves to the Student Loan Company.

Our approach to future commissioning arrangements and funding of clinical placements will focus on aligning the number of placements with the number of students required to meet our workforce plan for the NHS, ensuring patients continue to receive safe, high quality care and that students have a high quality learning experience.

We will  be holding listening exercise events across the country in September to inform our approach to future management of placements.
