Improving Surgical Training pilot

6 March 2017

Trainees in the East Midlands look set to take part in HEE’s Improving Surgical Training (IST) pilot.

Developed in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons in England, the pilot is designed to improve the training process for general surgery by:

  • enhancing the relationship between supervisor and trainee;
  • developing the wider surgical team to free up time to train;
  • introducing more innovative approaches to simulation; and
  • developing assessment methods to support individual progress.

Royal Derby Hospital and Nottingham University Hospitals will be taking part in the pilot, which is due to launch in August 2018.

In his speech to the NHS Providers conference in November, Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt described the IST project as an opportunity to pilot a ‘modern firm’ that enhances the effectiveness of medical teams and makes juniors feel more valued.
