Interns gain experience in NHS

Career Ready is a UK charity linking employers with schools and colleges to open the opportunity for young people to gain experience in the world of work. During July and August NHS arms length bodies (ALBs) trusts and clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) within Greater Manchester, Liverpool and Cheshire benefited from the advanced minds of 18 interns for four weeks. We were lucky enough to be allocated two interns to join us in the Manchester and Liverpool offices.

Joe Williams completed his internship at Regatta Place, Liverpool, working with the Education Transformation Development Managers. During his time there, Joe was instrumental in developing a website for the team, which included resources which Joe researched for. As the team he was working with weren’t as savvy as Joe, his legacy to the development team was to prepare a beginners guide for website development to ensure the work was continued.

Joe gave the following feedback about his internship:

I found my internship beneficial and felt I was doing something relevant to the business. I felt included within the team and developed good working relationships. My perceptions of the NHS have changed significantly, as I wasn’t aware of the amount of career opportunities that there are. It has also changed my aspirations for the future and I will likely be pursuing an apprenticeship rather than going down the university route with my career.

At PP3, Manchester, Dani Bentham joined the Education Transformation Team for her internship and put her IT skills to creative use and good practice, supporting the project team with administration.

Dani gave the following feedback about her internship:

Sometimes I found the work confusing, as I didn’t initially understand the context of what I was doing. However, the team supported me well and my internship has helped greatly boost my confidence and put organisational, communications and self-management skills into practice. I never imagined there would be so much work behind the scenes in the NHS.
