One thousand additional medical education places

3 October 2017

Health Education England (HEE) and Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) have today set out how organisations can bid for 1,000 additional medical education places that will expand medical school provision.

The document outlines both the process for submitting bids and the criteria against which bids will be assessed. Bids are invited from HEFCE fundable higher education institutions that deliver UK-registered primary medical qualifications approved by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Organisations who want to find out more about how to bid are invited to a special briefing event on Tuesday 10 October 2017 which will be held in HEFCE London Office, Finlaison House.

Professor Ian Cumming, Chief Executive, Health Education England said:

This major investment in undergraduate places is very welcome. The 25 per cent increase in places shows there is a real commitment to a sustainable future home-grown medical workforce, making us self-sufficient in the supply of doctors for years to come, giving more young people from diverse backgrounds the chance to become a doctor.

These extra places also give us the opportunity, with partners across health and education, to respond to NHS need, providing doctors in the specialties and places that patients need long into the future.
