Successful internship programme - Summer 2017

17 August 2017

Over the summer we have worked in partnership with Career Ready and offered 48 internships within the Yorkshire and Humber region. The interns’ have had placements within the Trusts, CCG’s, Hospices, Primary Care and HEE YH.

This is the third year we have run this internship programme; we hope to run the programme again and would welcome other stakeholders and teams within HEE to offer placements.

Interested in taking part later this year or next year, contact Sharon Simister on 07920 295550 or email sharon.simister@hee.nhs.uk

At HEE we asked our interns for comments on the programme:

Olivia Morris - The Rodillian Academy

During my internship with the Workforce Transformation Team, I have had a realistic insight to the 'real' world of work and what working in an office is like. The main thing that stood out to me is how many different jobs there are behind the scenes of the NHS and that it isn’t just made up of the people who you see in hospital. This has been an eye-opener to me and got me thinking about possible career routes that I could go down in Psychology. I have been given many invaluable opportunities, not only by going out to different places like Clinical Photography, but also by improving my knowledge of the NHS and my technological skills. I have been doing tasks such as website design, dementia research projects, leaflet and postcard design, spreadsheets and a whole host of other things. The variety of tasks given has really allowed me to see a range of different roles within the Workforce Transformation Team. The internship has been an opportunity of a lifetime and I am so glad that I signed up to Career Ready, simply because the skills and values I have gained during my internship will definitely help me when it comes to getting a career in the future.

Daniel Evans - The Rodillian Academy

Throughout my internship with HEE, I have been shown the wide scope of jobs within the NHS. Upon arrival, I shared the common misconception that the NHS was just doctors and nurses. However, through my internship, I have been exposed to other roles in the NHS; namely the in-office jobs, involving a whole host of things, including website design and resource gathering. The experience has changed my perception of the NHS, as through my work I have delved deeper into more unknown jobs and policies of the NHS. An example of this came through the website designing tasks given to us; I initially thought that there wouldn’t be many rules around how the site be set out, but through reading the NHS Identity guidelines, I discovered that the NHS has a set and consistent house-style. These experiences are eye-opening, and have given me vast amounts of information on what the real working world is like. There are so many unknown professions, that you usually do not get to know about until you are actually on the career ladder, so being exposed to them now through my internship is invaluable to me. On the whole, the experience has been positive, and I have built a multitude of skills and broadened my knowledge not only on the NHS, but on the world of work in general.

Harry Walker – St John Fisher Voluntary Academy

My internship within HEE Medical and Dental has been great so far. The team have been very welcoming and have offered plenty of support in helping me to complete the tasks I have been given. The placement has given me an insight into the workplace and more specifically the NHS. I have been given tasks that would be done on a day to day basis, allowing me to experience this first hand. The placement is useful in preparing me for the future when I take on a full time career myself and a look into this specific job role as a programme support worker, which I would now definitely consider as a career!

Lucy Barnes-Durrance - Garforth Academy

I have taken part in an ICT internship for quality here in HEE Leeds for the past four weeks where I have been shadowing Jane Burnett and Sarah Rowson in their normal working day. My role has included working on databases, spreadsheets, researching information on the internet and by telephone, and photocopying.

The internship has helped me gain an understanding of the working environment and how to work with colleagues. I have realised the importance of time management, punctuality, reliability and have grown in confidence, particularly when using the telephone.

I have very much enjoyed the experience, appreciating being a useful, productive part of the team.

As well as asking our teams their views:

Sharon Simister – Workforce Transformation

This is my 3rd year taking part in the Career Ready programme and it has been our best experience. What can we say about Olivia and Daniel? One word AMAZING!!!! They have gone above and beyond our expectations. They have completed all work given to them to a high standard. We set them a task to research new information and update our website, thinking this would take them 4 weeks, how wrong we were, they completed this halfway through the internship but we haven’t wasted their talents, we then set them more challenging and complex work to complete. All the team have been so impressed with them and wish them all the best for the future.

Jane Burnett – Quality

This is the first time I have taken an intern from the Career Ready programme and it won’t be the last. Lucy came to us from Garforth Academy as the project we had for her was to work on a database we have been developing. Within in the first week she had done most of what we had asked her to do. Although originally working in the Quality team, Lucy has also been helping Programme Support with the processing of ARCPs and general admin. Lucy has also been assisting with a data cleanse on the healthcare placements website. At the beginning Lucy was quite shy and she is still quiet but has come of her shell and joins in conversations with staff. I have also encouraged Lucy to ring some of our GP practices for information and it has been good to see her communication skills develop over time. It has been a pleasure to have Lucy in the team, even though it is only for a short period of time. I would encourage all functions to consider taking an intern.

Kate McCarthy – Programme Support

Everyone loves Harry as he is so cheerful and helpful! Harry is doing several pieces of work for us in Programme Support as we are trying to broaden his work experience whilst he is with us. His main project is in relation to our websites for each School. He has completed a report for each one and included out of date information and links that no longer work. Harry has completed the Umbraco training so he will now be making the changes on the website which will include requiring him to contact Training Programme Directors for up to date information, looking for and updating the links.
