Supportive statement for 'junior doctor' name change
10 October 2017
Professor Wendy Reid, Director of Education and Quality and Medical Director, Health Education England said:
This is a very welcome debate as we are leading a work programme to improve the training, education and working life of doctors. Feeling valued and respected is key to the morale of all those working in the NHS, and we recognise that doctors in training programmes are working at a very high level, delivering much of the care patients receive and the current terminology could not only risk undermining them, but also potentially leads to confusion for the public. Of course we are not in a position to change the name ourselves, as that is a contractual issue but we are willing to play our role in any future discussions around this issue.
