Second video for GP recruitment campaign launched

29 September 2015

The second in a series of six short videos to highlight the diverse nature of the role of a GP is being launched online today by Health Education England (HEE) as part the ‘There’s nothing general about general practice’ campaign.

This video focuses on asthma, a common condition seen in general practice. Like every video in this series, these stories are inspired by real life examples providing a snapshot to illustrate the variety and sometimes unusual work that GPs do every day.

They also underline the main theme of the campaign which is that a GP provides individual one-to-one advice, care and support and they are central to the families and communities they serve.

Professor Simon Gregory, Director and Dean of Education and Quality, Midlands and East said:

General practice is a fantastic career, yes it is challenging one at present, but it is a great career choice for the future. Our campaign is targeted at Foundation Doctors who are about to choose their specialty and medical students; we want to them to see what a diverse and varied role it is and highlight the positive impact that their work will have on the lives of the people they look after.

The videos illustrate the variety that is general practice, GPs never know what challenge is going to come through the door – no day is ever the same.

They are a key part of the campaign that will run across social media and digital platforms to inspire and inform young doctors about the variety of careers in general practice as they make their decision about which speciality training to apply for this autumn.

It also includes online videos, posters and other marketing materials which will be used at recruitment events around the country. A team of qualified GPs have been recruited as ambassadors to spread the word about general practice, talk about their experiences and provide first-hand advice and experience to those applying this year.

The campaign is spearheaded by Health Education England (HEE) with the active involvement and backing of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the British Medical Association (BMA) and NHS England. It is one of a package of measures which are outlined in the 10 point plan which is aims to attract and retain more GPs.
