Professor Wendy Reid statement on Junior Doctor strike

19 November 2015

Professor Wendy Reid: Director of Education and Quality, Medical Director says:

Health Education England’s (HEE) primary focus continues to be the provision of safe, high quality care for patients, through effective high quality healthcare education and training. Now that we know the outcome of the ballot, on days that industrial action is taking place we will be suspending any training work that would take senior doctors away from the front line. This includes, for example,  ARCP (annual review of competence progression) meetings, recruitment episodes and training days to ensure that seniors are available to provide patient care.

This includes cancellation of GP training events, allowing GP trainers to remain in practices providing primary/community care cover on days when there is industrial action. For trainees, this will mean either providing care, following self-directed learning (which would need to be logged in their e-portfolio as evidence, of working) or taking industrial action, which they have a right to do as employees.
