Barts Health summer school is a hit with local students

5 August 2015

The Barts Health Summer School took place last week with 27 students from local schools and colleges visiting the trust. The week is part of the East London Health Careers project which helps to inform local students about the wide variety of East London Health Careers on offer in the NHS.

Aga Wrobel and Kaylie Devlin from the Barts Health Public Health team organised the event. It included a range of talks given by healthcare professionals around the trust and a trip to the helipad to learn about the trauma care provided by London’s Air Ambulance and The Royal London Hospital’s emergency department and trauma service.

Aga Wrobel and Kaylie Devlin also manage the trust’s work experience programme. As part of that programme, the trust has hosted over 100 students into placements at Barts Health.

For further information, or to become a health ambassador, please contact Aga Wrobel or Kaylie Devin on tel: 020 7377 7426.

All students gave very positive feedback and truly enjoyed the programme. Comments from the feedback forms included:

  • “The programme was very useful and it helped me become more determined to be a dentist. I also enjoyed it. It’s more useful than work experience.”
  • “It went far beyond what I expected in a good way.”
  • “Simulation day gave me confidence in wanting to do medicine.”
  • “Definitely has peaked my interest further in the field of health care, I’ve also looked into other careers other than just medicine.”
  • “This was very well planned, very motivating. I absolutely loved it!”
  • “Talking to medical students and doctors was very useful in making an informed choice.”
  • “Increased my interest. Understand more about roles of NHS health professionals.”
