Sir Keith Pearson and Ian Cumming visit Health Education North West

29 November 2013

Health Education North West was delighted to welcome Health Education England’s Chair, Sir Keith Pearson and Chief Executive, Professor Ian Cumming to the North West on Friday 22 November.

The day began with a chance for Sir Keith to meet with a group of leadership trainees and hear about their experiences of working and learning in the North West.

Accompanied by HENW Chair, Sally Cheshire and Managing Director, Laura Roberts the group then visited to one of the leading acute Trust’s in the country, University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM), where they conducted a tour of the Education and Research Centre which brings together all of the education and training activities of UHSM under one umbrella.

Sir Keith and Ian met with staff, undergraduate students and apprentices. Motivations to work in the NHS were explored during discussions and Sir Keith stressed the importance of recruiting staff with NHS values.

A visit to the simulation suite, where Sir Keith and Ian observed a simulated operation taking place, proved to be a real highlight. Both Sir Keith and Ian were thoroughly impressed with the facilities at the Education and Research Centre and both commented on the quality of communication between staff members during the exercise.

Sir Keith and Ian were then introduced to the Better Training Better Care programme which aims to improve the quality of training and learning for the benefit of patient care.

Following a return to Manchester Sir Keith and Ian viewed a demonstration of eWIN, which is the North West’s very own ground-breaking and award-winning Electronic Workforce Information Network. Sir Keith and Ian were able to gain a real insight into how eWIN supports NHS organisations to improve patient care by delivering the best high quality workforce and education planning through safe workforce capacity, capability and productivity.

Sally Cheshire and Laura Roberts were quick to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the day.
