Being better prepared for practice as a pharmacist in all sectors
We speak to trainee pharmacists Ellie Hunter, Hamzah Farooq and Joshua Brocklebank about their experience doing foundation training in general practice and how this helped them meet the GPhC learning outcomes.
- Irrespective of your career aspirations, you will have to understand how people are managed and supported in general practice. By learning how healthcare is delivered in general practice you will be better able to support patients in any other sector you work in. You will be better able to support patients when they transition care settings as well understanding how to work with the wider multi-disciplinary team to deliver the best outcomes for your patients.
- The skills you can develop will also help you in delivering care, including your ability to deal with low and medium acuity conditions and manage them autonomously.
- Learning and applying clinical and physical assessment skills will also better prepare you to undertake an independent prescribing qualification later in your career.

“It is really nice to see what happens to patients when they go home and how their care gets followed up. I thought that complements the hospital training really well because if the patients ask me then I will know exactly what happens upon discharge. I think that helps the patients realise that you know what you are talking about. I was constantly working with other healthcare professionals I was working with other pharmacists, nurses and GPs so all the competencies around referring to different people and assisting different people you get as well.”
