What is the interviewer looking for?

The interviewer will be trying to figure out:

  • Can you do the job (capability – your skills, knowledge, and experience)
  • Will you do the job (motivation- your drive and enthusiasm)
  • How you will thrive within the organisation (culture, values, and teamwork)

Interviews are still the most frequently used selection tool in the UK. And while some recruiters, including HEE, may use other methods of assessment, such as psychometric tests, in-tray exercises, role play etc, interviews remain by far the most common method. And will probably play the biggest part in deciding whether you get the job or not.

However, interviews operate according to a set of rules, some commonly understood, and others are “hidden”. By knowing the rules of the interview process and by preparing for these, you will increase your chances of success.

The next section will reveal some of these rules and help you to succeed.
