Imaging Training Academies

Training Academies for Imaging are currently operational in the South East, South West, East of England, London, Midlands, North East & Yorkshire, and North West regions

The Imaging Training Academies have the potential to provide greater health system value than traditional education models as they:

  • Enable training and supervision capacity to be expanded quickly and much more cost effectively
  • Enable innovation in training through rapid at scale adoption of technology enhanced learning and new multi-disciplinary learning models
  • Accelerate independent working and service delivery productivity of trainees
  • Enable more geographical equity in the distribution of training and hence the health professional workforce

Through the Imaging Training Academies, training is provided to the whole imaging workforce in a multi-disciplinary environment. Staff to be trained through the academies includes:

  • Clinical Radiologists
  • Enhanced Radiography
  • Reporting Radiographers
  • Sonographers
  • Medical Physicists
  • Radiology Nurses
  • Imaging Support Workers
  • Assistant Practitioners
  • Mamographers

Whilst there is some national oversight, each of the training academies in England are based on a sustainable academy model which has been developed to meet local need.  The exact configuration of the regional academies has been designed locally, in collaboration with local imaging networks. However, all academies have been designed in line with common principles such as being able to provide training and education across the whole region, access to dedicated learning environments and the use of simulation equipment and models.

Initial academy development was made possible through one-year joint funding from NHSEI and HEE to pump prime development. Development is further funded by HEE with the expectation that academies will be self-sustaining by 2025.
