Year 2

The second year of the pilot ran from January 2022 – December 2022 and continued with the same pilot sites from year 1.

Recognising that staff retention in these specialised roles can be a challenge, a specific aim of the second year was to investigate the reasons for this and to focus on solutions. Two main strategies were adopted to improve the situation and encourage retention.

  • One strategy was to enable further professional development for the extended team members
  • A second strategy was to facilitate access to shared online clinical teaching with core surgery trainees

Novel service developments in the pilot continued in year two and are highlighted in this report.

The year two report can be downloaded here: The Health Education England Extended Surgical Teams Pilot: Year 2 Progress Report.
