Medical Education Leaders Multi-Specialty conference blog

(Published 20 March 2023)

The national enhance team were delighted to attend and have an abstract accepted for a poster at the Medical Education Leaders UK Multi-Specialty conference in March. The 2-day conference in Nottingham brought together thought leaders involved in designing and delivering postgraduate healthcare education to share their ideas and influence strategies.

The enhance programme is being piloted by seven trailblazer sites across England, with a cohort of over 200 multi-professional learners, and plans to expand from August 2023. Our poster on the topic of ‘Enhancing generalist skills: Supporting professional development for colleagues via traditional and alternative training pathways’ highlighted learning from the programme and benefits to learners to date.

From a medical workforce perspective, the initial programme approach was to engage doctors in training and subsequently other healthcare professionals in training roles. However, we have seen unexpected positive engagement from those outside traditional training pathways, such as locally employed doctors, SAS roles, as well as international nursing and medical graduates new to UK practice and Allied Health Professions.

Our key poster message is that enhanced generalist skills are important and valid for all healthcare professionals, yet we recognise a large cohort of our healthcare workforce are currently employed outside of traditional training roles. Parity of access to post-graduate educational development is essential for future workforce development and is an important consideration for the expansion of postgraduate training opportunities.
