Oral health
Mouth Care Matters is a Health Education England funded project that aims to improve the oral health of adults in hospital. The initiative aims to upskill nursing staff and allied health care professionals so that they can support vulnerable patients with mouth care. This happens through training, provision of educational resources and signposting to existing resources.
Oral health had been found to deteriorate amongst people especially in hospitals. A lack of mouth care can lead to difficulties eating and drinking which can lead to poor nutritional intake, and infections such as pneumonia amongst older patients.
Whilst the programme was originally aimed at older adults, a paediatric version is also being developed called Mini Mouth Care Matters in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH).
