Background to the programme

The programme started as a pilot in 2019, with the first cohort beginning their placements in July/August 2019. Trainees recruited on the programme spent three to six months of structured training experience in general practice in conjunction with a hospital or community pharmacy foundation training programme.

Over 100 trainees were recruited across England in 2019/20.

Significant work has taken place to support host sites in the development of their placements, including the development of an education framework. With many partnerships now in their 5^th year of running the programme, it is expected over 700 places will be available for trainees commencing their foundation year in 2023.
