South west
The South West Simulation Network is looking at how focusing on human factors through simulation training can support delivery of improved patient safety.
The simulation network grew out of the enthusiasm and expertise of people from throughout the region and is built on the foundations of previous groups that had similar goals (such as STAR, STELLAR and STEER).
Its purpose is to bring individuals, stakeholders and commissioners with an interest in patient safety, human factors and teamwork, quality improvement, clinical education, simulation-based education and technology enhanced learning together to optimise the effectiveness of delivery models through integration of simulation.
The Network meets four times a year to provide a networking event to support those with mutual interests to identify common goals, collaboration, sharing of ideas and best practice.
Membership is open to all staff who deliver healthcare education in all settings south west.
In the south west we are working with a range of healthcare professionals to develop a series of projects that aim to raise awareness of human factors and non-technical skills with teams and individuals, supporting efforts to promote patient safety.
Across the region 16 fellows, who are funded by us, have been appointed from 12 organisations to develop simulation-based education and human factors training in clinical settings. Each fellow is supported by local mentor and project lead.
As well as improving patient safety it is hoped the work will also help organisations to deliver cultural change.
Further funding was granted to enable the fellows to attain a PG Certificate in Patient Safety and Simulation, which will assist the individuals further in developing their projects.
To enable for work to be undertaken on curriculum research and to develop links with other professional areas simulation specialty school leads have been appointed by us in the south west.
The overall objective is to create a simulation network across the south west identifying and supporting excellent practice and training using simulation as an educational tool, which will assist organisations in delivering high quality care and ensuring patient safety.
